School of Architecture and Civil Engineering

Research Assistant: M.Sc. Richard Haverland

During and after his architectural studies at the University of Wuppertal, Richard Haverland worked in both international and national architectural offices, always with a strong focus on challenging design projects. At the same time, he was able to gain important experience in a university context during his employment in the laboratory for virtual and mixed reality and developed a profound understanding of the creative explorative potential of virtual reality (VR) at the interface of architecture and art.

His interest in interdisciplinary forms of design and the connection between machine vision and human perception developed early on during his Master's programme. This ultimately led to his final thesis, in which he investigated precisely this interface and derived architectural design methods from the phenomenological effect of a VR environment, transferred them to a design and interlinked the two. Since February 2023, he has been deepening this interest in the "Chronicle Cloud" project (ongoing) developed with Valerie Feldhaus, coupling it with a fascination for 3D-scanned models and their alienation.

Richard Haverland has been part of the Chair of Theory and Discourse of Design since September 2023
